Directional Casting Training
Intermediate Hunting Dog Program – Handling
Our Intermediate Dog Program is for dogs that have completed the Basic Gun Dog Program and are ready to learn directional casting, blind retrieves, and hand singles. In this program, your dog will learn more than just taking hand casts—they’ll master the full concept of running a blind and refine their marking skills.
Stage 1 – Learning the Different Casts and Sit Whistle
We begin by teaching your dog to run to a back pile, then progress to understanding each individual hand cast.
- Differentiate between right over, left over, right back, and left back
- Learn to sit on the whistle for control at a distance
- Advance to sitting on a dead run and taking the correct cast
This foundational stage builds the dog’s understanding of directional cues and responsiveness to the whistle.
Stage 2 – Limited Pattern Blinds and Teaching Cold Blinds
Once the dog understands the basics, we introduce pattern blinds to build confidence and control. This quickly progresses to cold blinds—retrieves they’ve never seen before.
- Develop confidence running blinds in the field
- Navigate various terrains and cover types
- Refine obedience and handling precision at a distance
This stage strengthens trust and communication between dog and handler.
Stage 3 – Water Blinds
The final stage focuses on water blinds—a key skill for advanced gun dogs.
- Teach the dog to sit or tread water on the whistle
- Take accurate casts while swimming
- Progress from water “T” drills to running full water blinds
This stage solidifies your dog’s control, precision, and confidence in both land and water retrieves.
