Basic Gun Dog Program
At Cross Creek Kennels, we specialize in Texas hunting dog training with a strong focus on developing reliable retrievers for duck, dove, goose, and all migratory bird hunting. Whether you’re preparing for hunt tests or want a lifelong hunting partner, our goal is to lay a solid foundation for long-term success in the field. Our Basic Gun Dog Program starts at 6 months of age and is structured into three key stages.
Stage 1 – Obedience & Field Introduction
Build strong obedience both at home and in the field. Dogs are introduced to:
- Basic commands: “Here” (come + heel), “Sit”
- E-collar conditioning for off-leash control
- Exposure to birds, gunfire, water, and natural cover
- Developing retrieve drive and confidence
We reinforce obedience in field settings—ensuring a clean return and heel after retrieves. Typical timeline: ~2 months (varies by dog).
Stage 2 – Mouth Work (Force Fetch)
Proper retriever delivery without chewing, playing, or dropping:
- Teach a reliable Hold on bumpers
- Prevent mouthing or early drops
- Deliver cleanly to hand on every retrieve
We progress from bumper table work to field application, blending obedience with retrieve mechanics. Typical timeline: ~6–8 weeks.
Stage 3 – Steadiness & Marking
Essential drills to finish a reliable gun dog:
- Remote launchers for visual marking
- Steadiness: wait to be sent after the shot
- Real-world field scenarios combining all prior work
Brings obedience, delivery, and bird drive together. Typical timeline: ~6–8 weeks.
